The Marathon I Didn't Do

Today was the Seattle Marathon.  It was a perfect weather day for a marathon.  I spent the day machine quilting a quilt.  I thought about the marathoners all day.  As the hours passed I made remarks regarding the marathon such as, "I would now be at mile 18 on Lake Washington Blvd".  It was a bittersweet day.

My foot/ankle is better but not good enough for even a half-marathon.  Tonight was my first walk since I sprained my ankle.  I walked 1.81 miles through the neighborhood and looked at Christmas lights.  It took me 37 minutes.

Major Setback

I'm major bummed right now.  I'm sitting on a recliner, with my left foot wrapped in an ace bandage, propped up on a pillow.  I have crutches sitting close by.  Last night I stepped off a curb and fell.  My left ankle hurt badly and I skinned my right knee.  Klutz should be my middle name!!!

This morning it was x-rayed.  The doctor said it is sprained.  He is not sure I'm going to be able to run the marathon next Sunday.  I have been ordered to put no weight on it for the next few days.  I'm thankful there is no break. On the other hand, I'm extremely upset that all the time and effort I put into training might not culminate into crossing the finish line and having a medal hanging around my neck.

10 Miles

My overdue 10 mile training run/walk was completed today.  I was supposed to do it last Sunday.  My time was 143 minutes.  I'm entering the final stretch of the marathon training known as tapering.  I can't believe the Seattle Marathon is only a week and a half away.  I should be scared but I'm not.  My time goal is to do the best I can.  If I'm able to match my June marathon time of 6:33 I'll be very pleased.  If not, oh well.  I'm doing this for fun and to keep myself in shape.  I'm running more than I've ever run in my entire life.  Not too bad for a 50 year old.

I finished watching the second portion (1985) of the mini-series, North and South.  It was titled Love and War, I think.  The third portion (1994) was panned by the critics but I'm determined to watch it.  I never saw the originals on tv and bought the trilogy at Costco.  Gotta love Costco!

4 Miles

Today I walked and only jogged a teensy bit.  4 miles in 64 minutes.  Tomorrow I will do better.

Easy Run

Today I did an easy run/walk on the treadmill.  I completed 4 miles in 57 minutes.  I ran/walked at the ratio of 2/1.  I'm planning on doing this for the marathon later in the month.  To keep me busy I watched the beginning of the 1986 mini-series called North and South.  I love 19th and 20th Century history so the hour flew by.

Lesson learned today... Caffeine is good.  I had a Diet Coke today and felt wonderful.

Basic Weight Training Class

Today I attended another Strength Training Class.  The class went smoothly and my muscles are sore.  Not overly sore, just the right amount to make me feel like I'm doing something good for my body.  My neck didn't hurt yesterday but I wasn't going to take any chances so no Yoga today.  I'm going to try to do both classes next Tuesday.  Tomorrow is a run/walk day.

Yoga and Basic Weight Training

Today I started my new cross-training exercises.  I am taking yoga and basic weight training classes at the YMCA.  I've read both of these are the ideal cross-training exercises for running.  I enjoyed both of them today but wrenched my neck in the yoga class.  I've been icing it and the pain isn't going away so I may be calling the doctor tomorrow.  Quite a bummer for my first day of class.  I hope the Thursday classes go smoother.

20 Miles on Sunday, November 4th

It's been a long time since my last post.  We first went on a vacation to the Midwest for 2 weeks in late September.  I've mostly kept up on my marathon training.  I need to keep up with the blogging.

Sunday I completed my 20 mile training run/walk. I did 14 miles on the Centennial Trail and the last 6 miles in Marysville.  I did a run/walk ratio of  running 2 minutes and walking 1 minute.  The first 12 miles went smoothly and the next 8 miles were a bit more of a struggle.  I took more walk breaks and then walked the last few miles.  My legs are sore today but nothing that is too painful.

I'm finding a few things that are working for me on this quest for running.  I've found out taking ibuprophen doesn't work for me.  Sports beans are easier to eat than gummi bears. Another thing is I need to take my high blood pressure medicine before running.  Chocolate milk is a great after run drink.  It is supposed to repair muscles and tastes yummy.

Little by little I'm becoming a runner.
